Helping to Heal the Side Effects of Chemotherapy

Treatment for chemotherapy patients using hands-on healing

Mention Spiritual Healing, Reiki and Chemotherapy in the same sentence and most people would call you barking mad! But as with all these things, it's only people who haven't tried it that express these opinions, because most that have will swear by it, especially as a post chemo symptom sorter. Yes, that's right, healing seems to help the body cope with the after effects of a chemotherapy session, and because of that, may even help the chemo work better.

Phil, how can you say that, what proof do you have?
Your right!, I have no absolute proof, but consider this; You have introduced what is essentially a poison into your system, either into your blood stream, into your stomach and digestive tract, or rubbed into your skin. The body, the healthy body that is, has to also cope with the bullet that is being targetted at the tumour, and it has several ways to do that.

What is the body's normal response to ingesting or absorbing poison? Male Patient Receiving Chemotherapy Treatment
  • feeling and being sick
  • diarrhoea
  • stomach pain
  • chest pain
  • drowsiness, dizziness or weakness
  • chills (shivering)
  • high temperature of 38C (100.4F) or above
  • loss of appetite
  • headaches
  • irritability
  • flu like symptoms (muscle aches and pains)
  • difficulty swallowing (dysphagia)
  • breathing difficulties, rapid breathing
  • producing more/less saliva than normal, dry mouth
  • skin rash/burns
  • bleeding gums or nose
  • blue lips and skin (cyanosis)
  • burns around the nose or mouth
  • double vision or blurred vision, large pupils, uncontrolled movement of the eyes (nystagmus)
  • fatigue/exhaustion
  • mental confusion
  • seizures (fits), severe muscle tension, cramps
  • loss of consciousness, coma (in severe cases)
  • tremor (shaking)
  • loss of co-ordination
  • low blood sugar (hypoglycaemia), which can cause symptoms including sweating, trembling and irritability
  • sweating
  • ringing in the ears (tinnitus)
  • irregular or rapid heartbeat
  • low blood pressure, which can cause symptoms including lightheadedness and fainting
  • feeling agitated
  • mouth and/or stomach ulcers
Many of the common side effects of chemotherapy are listed above in bold, although thankfully, it's unlikely that you'll experience more than a few at any one time. Some lucky individuals have no side effects at all. But those that do can find themselves feeling miserable for days afterwards.

You see the body produces these symptoms because it is pre-programmed to get poison out of our blood, cells, muscles and organs, just about any way it can, as rapidly as it can. Witness the incidence of projectile vomiting so often portrayed in hospital drama on TV. High temperatures in the body are produced to kill biological invaders (bacterial/viral) at a temperature just less than is likely to kill ourselves. It is a survival technique and therefore a natural response.

Healing is not to switch off these responses, but to help the body to cope with them. To help the body relax into them, and shorten their duration by giving the body support so as not to fight against them. Once they do their job as efficiently as possible, they subside until the next time.
Chemotherapy Patient
Take back control
This is often how it is described to me and is one of the reasons so many patients with cancer also use healing. Submitting to chemotherapy is like handing control over to someone else to make me as sick as they can. To them, healing is like taking back control. Thus hands on healing is used as a complementary therapy and is perfectly safe to use right alongside your hospital tretments.

What we think healing does is change and balance the energy fields in and around your body, not by the practitioner, but through the practitioner, and in this way we are trying to help on a physical, psychological, emotional and spiritual level.

Reiki and healing are one (yes, they are one and the same) of only a few types of holistic medicine recognized by the American Cancer Society as being very beneficial for a patients overall health and wellbeing. I am quietly waiting for the UK to formally adopt the same stance because whilst reading and preparing for this article I came across a study in the USA that found up to 42% of people with cancer used some type of spiritual healing or Reiki. That is very high when you ask the question, when have 42% of the population ever agreed on anything?

I think we are a long way off that figure in the UK, but you will see me plugging away at this until we are also in the same arena. Requests for healing in cancer are certainly on the increase in my practice. Why is that do you suppose? Perhaps it's because after all the uncertainty, the chemicals and expensive machinery, taking back control of the situation is the most empowering thing any of us can really do.

How do I pick a healer I can trust?
This is a difficult one, because I know healers who belong to reputable associations (ie.NFSH) who still have customs and beliefs that put me totally on edge and makes the hair stand up on the back of my neck. If I'm second or even third choice for a patient, I sometimes hear why they have needed to keep changing healers.

My advice is go with your gut instinct on the first contact, even if that is on the phone. If is sounds wrong, its wrong! If you don't like what you see, its wrong! If it smells bad, its wrong too! And if you don't like the tone, or what you hear, get out of there and find someone else.

One patient recently was told, 'Well what can you expect, you've got cancer because you were a butcher and ate meat all your life'. Another patient was suffering with terribe short-term depression about her cancer and was told, 'I can't cure your cancer until you stop feeling depressed, in fact, that's what is making it worse', implying that with depression out of the way, the healer could cure the cancer. Which of course, when that didn't happen, would be blamed on obesity, dehydration, bad diet, the state of the economy and lack of world peace.

People that talk this way are not only talking out of their a55, but have an ego high enough to match the depths of their ineptitude. You need to walk away and they need to be struck off. Do you know I went to a healer in Glastonbury (a dubious proposition at best) once and she said, 'The angels didn't come to help me today, you must be in a really bad place for them to stay away'. I suggested she should get a proper job. I got that somewhat sorrowful look that said, you poor man, you don't know what you're talking about.

So I know first hand how difficult this can be when it comes to selecting the right person to help you. Go by the recommendation of others in the hospital waiting rooms, see who they use and why, ask your friends, or see if someone online speaks your language. That's kind of how so many end up here I think, people connect with what I say and how I say it, for which I am very grateful. Ask around, make a few calls and see who you 'connect with'.

Hands on Healing following your Chemotherapy treatment. Healing and Reiki both have a useful side effect of their own. They can bring about profound changes to a body ravaged by the worst that modern medicine has to offer. They can help the body cope with both the cancer treatment and also the side effects of that treatment, while having a marked effect on the overall health and well being of the patient. Visit The Haven Healing Centre in Cheddar for a course of healing and/or Reiki treatments. Appointments and a treatment price list are available by clicking here. I look forward to welcoming you soon. Phil.
