Treatment for Sports Performance and Sports Injury Recovery

Sports Massage at The Haven Healing Centre

Sports Massage involves the management, manipulation and rehabilitation of soft tissues of the body including muscles, ligaments and tendons to enhance their function and promote relaxation and well-being.

Sports Massage is typically used before, during, and after athletic events to help alleviate the stress and tension which builds up in the body’s soft tissues during physical activity. Sports Massage involves different types of stroking touch, pressure strokes or flowing movements applied to the skin and underlying tissue to release muscle tension and pain, to relax the body and enhance tissue function. This helps the body to recover from fatigue, to relieve localised swelling, to reduce muscle tension, to promote flexibility and to prevent injuries, and thus assist the athlete toward peak performance.

Muscles that feels tight, painful, tender or weak are showing signs of metabolic congestion. Congested muscle does not function at its full potential, is weaker than normal muscle and can process less oxygen. This will hold you back from carrying out sporting activities or any day to day activity. Deep tissue sports massage can quickly help to decongest and improve the condition of the muscle, which will alleviate these training symptoms.

Sports massage is not just for sports people. Anyone can benefit from sports massage. Minor injuries and lesions can be repaired quickly and effectively. Deep tissue massage is used to releases muscular congestion and pain, to drain away fatigue, to assist the lymphatic system, to improve circulation and enhance the functional quality of muscle tissue. The massage will also help prepare the athlete for peak performance, promote flexibility and prevent future injuries.

What causes muscles to become congested and painful?
Sports massage to back of leg in the clinic
  • Delayed muscle soreness
  • Minor muscle or connective tissue damage
  • Frequent or intense training
  • Inefficient and incorrect use of the body
  • Local muscle spasms that reduce blood flow
  • Postural distortion or imbalances
  • Trigger points or stress points
  • under-developed/over-developed muscle
  • A build up of waste products (metabolites) from energy production
  • Carrying an old injury or trauma
You don't have to be in the Olympic athlete to benefit from sports massage. Sports massage is good for anyone carrying injuries, chronic pain, local pain, or who have a restricted range of motion. For athletes sports massage will have an enormous impact on your performance and ensure your muscles are in peak condition, while training and playing or racing, allowing you to perform to the best of your ability.

Sports massage of the skin and underlying tissues increases blood circulation and the flow of lymphatic fluids, which increases the oxygenation and nutrition of the cells, aids in the removal of waste products, and allows the tissue to heal effectively. This reduces recovery time, improves flexibility, relieves pain and lessens the chances of repeated injury.

Sports massage to repair a damaged calf muscle Why should I bother to get a sports massage?
Good question! Many people play sports all across the country, amateur and professional, from kids playing football in the park to Olympic athletes at the peak of their careers, and a good percentage of them wouldn't know a good massage from a slap across the face. But what happens to your car over time if you don't get it serviced properly? It becomes worthless in the market place and at some point, sooner rather than later, you're going to get a hefty bill because things have worn out through lack of maintainence.

True, your body is a living organism and is a marvel of self healing and repair, while your car is not. But sport tends to put pressure on parts of the body that should last a lifetime, and in the sporting arena, this is often not the case. Specific parts of the body are trained to perform better than original design and so any imperfection shows up as pain, degeneration and injury. Continued use will cause excessive wear, more injuries and more pain. Recovery takes much longer, if at all, and there is always the danger of re-injury of the same point over and over again; The fastest way to end a promising career. Also, you'll always know, deep down, that you failed to reach your full potential, which will be the source of much sadness and regret as you get older.

Investing in sports massage is like getting your car serviced regularly. You will know that you can go out, confident that you are in good shape, sure that the lubricants are circulating freely and the joints are well greased. There is much evidence for the therapeutic and clinical benefits of massage.
