"Having a stutter causes me to have low self-esteem and low self-confidence". You know, I hear this all the time. It's generally not the stutter that is the problem. Well it is a problem, but it's more to do with what stuttering gives a person. This can be very painful emotionally. Stutterers hate their stutter. Sitting at the back of a room or class, avoiding all the best bits, feeling like a misfit, holding erratic conversations, suffering other peoples impatience or have them 'fill in the blanks', losing the good jobs at interviews, and avoiding meeting new people because of the embarrassment of an uncontrollable stammer.

Stuttering is emotionally painful, frustrating and often misunderstood. Approximately 1% of the adult population (that is 3 million Americans and 700k Brits), are afflicted with stuttering, with more than 3 times as many males being affected by the condition as females.

I think we can safely conclude that stammerers, whether children or adults are equally affected.

Stuttering has nothing to do with speech!
But I do think it has everything to do with the way we present ourselves. You think yourself into a stammer. When you prepare the word in your mind, you don't stammer, so you? It only affects the delivery. So, a stammer is introduced at the idea, or moment of performing the word. The anticipation of performing the sentence becomes part of the stammering behaviour.

Is there a relationship between stuttering or stammering and anxiety? Or, do I stutter because I am anxious?
For many years this was thought to be true, and many therapists still feel stammering is caused by anxiety of one form or another. It is true, that some people who stutter or stammer were once anxious, but it is also true that anxious people do not always develop a stammer. I'm more inclined to think that stammerers develop anxiety because of the difficulties they face during everyday communication, and over time, the reactions of other people, and the social consequences of an impatient audience. It's not always possible to just walk away, is it?

Do you treat everyone that comes with the same methods and techniques?
No, stammering and stuttering is not one single condition. Your experience, reason and reaction to stammering will be different to the next person. But, stammering does share some common features among most sufferers. Educational or social responses and consequences will be dependant on age, and may have an impact on your schooling or work prospects. You wouldn't believe how many stutterers are teachers, and you soon begin to wonder if there is something about that profession that attracts stutterers or creates them. One think is certain, every stutterer is unique and responds to different types of therapy and interventions. So no, everyone is seen as an individual and treated as such.

Nobody knows what causes stammering or stuttering. The once and for all definitive cause of stammering is still unknown, even if there is one. Many theories have been suggested, and dismissed over the years, maybe because we don't all fit into neat little categories and check boxes. I think that the idea of multiple causes of stammering is more likely. Why? Because it seems to be one of a number of coping strategies for the body which in this instance manifests as a stammer.

Quite often in practice, it becomes very clear what was potentially the cause of a stammer in this patient, or that person. It also becomes clear what circumstances trigger an increase in the stammer. But maybe the point is not to understand where a stammer originates, though I accept that this is often a very good starting point for any therapy, but perhaps the best way forward is to treat the stammer symptomatically. This is where I came from with my approach to stammering, and for the most part it has been very successful.

I'm not offering a cure, and also I'm not a speech therapist. What I want to offer you is the ability to effect a CONTROL over your stammer using the power of your mind. Something you do yourself, in your own time, at your own pace, and in your own way.

Are you one of the stammerers who feels they have tried everything else and wants to do their own thing; be their own therapist? The first thing to do is make the absolute, wholehearted decision to change the way you talk. No ifs, no buts. Every thought, every moment, every cell and bone in your body must want to change. Its no holds barred in the effort to conquer your stammer. Self doubt, anxiety, anger, a sense of hopelessness and negative thinking are the deadliest enemy of successful stammering self-therapy. So have the courage to be positive and enthusiastic in your endeavours, and prove to yourself just how effective self-therapy can be.

This CD set is not being promoted as a miracle cure for stammering, indeed some of the people I have tried this system on have taken as long as 20 weeks to get a result. But it is set out in a way that is a logical sequence of self help over time, easy to do, and empowering to you as the stammerer. Never try to force change; this will lead to stress and anxiety. Take your time, build on your strengths and you will make it in the end. You will recall how, for any stammerer, anxiety is your biggest enemy. So use this CD and learn to gain control over your stammer induced anxiety first, and then gain control over your stammer.

Most stammerers and stutterers have periods of fluency, which proves there is a 'cause' somewhere, even if you don't know what it is. In fact, because you may be sometimes 'distracted' away from stammering, it is likely/possible something to do with how you 'feel' at the time. Most experts can't agree on a definite cause, and the same experts also agree there is no infallible cure, despite years of research. So essentially that means the best therapy is going to be self-therapy.

You can probably think of a time when you talked to yourself without stammering. You don't stammer when you talk in your mind, and you probably don't stammer in your dreams, unless you are in a scary, or anxious state, or having a nightmare. Many stammerers don't stammer when they sing, shout, swear loudly or when talking during laughter.

The CD audio is very much in tune with this idea; the fact that you don't stammer or stutter in these other areas of your life, and so the idea of bringing this ability and confidence into the real world is paramount to making a mental shift that says, 'I'm not a stutterer, I'm a person who sometimes stutters'. It helps us to see ourselves in a new light, a positive light, one in which we are able to create change and have the resources to accomplish our goals and ambitions.

Our ability to convincingly do this in many other areas of our lives tells us that stammering therapy MUST, by definition, be a do-it-yourself therapy. Because if, for the most part, you've done this to yourself, by building up coping strategies, behaviours and mannerisms that have advanced or created the stammer, then it is reasonable to suppose, whichever method of treatment/therapy you choose, your stammer recovery will also be up to you.

It should be further recognized that stammerers are different in very many ways. Not only in the conditions under which they stammer, but in the manner of their stammer, and so not every practical method of recovery will, or can, be effective. However, the common thread is usually a deep desire to lose their stammer, and since we have established that anxiety is a mighty, if not THE most important contributor to a stammer, it makes sense to address this part of your stammer first.
